🎶 EU-CODE Begins in Rome: Wind Orchestras, Diversity, and a Shared European Beat

On May 28 and 29, 2025, the historic city of Rome welcomed the launch of EU-CODE – European Co-Creation in Diversity, an ambitious 30-month project co-funded by the European Union that aims to transform the world of wind orchestras through a bold combination of co-creation, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Hosted by the Conservatorio di Musica “Santa Cecilia”, the project’s coordinating institution, the two-day Kick-off meeting brought together four dynamic partners from across Europe:

  • Conservatorio di Musica “Santa Cecilia” (Italy)
  • Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Hungary)
  • Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain)
  • ACe20 (Italy)

Together, these institutions are set to reimagine the role of wind orchestras in contemporary Europe, making them more representative of the diverse cultural landscape of our continent and more in tune with today’s social and environmental challenges.

🎷 What Is EU-CODE All About?

EU-CODE is not just about music—it’s about how music can become a tool for connection, innovation, and inclusion. Through a series of activities like artist residencies, joint performances, thematic workshops, and inclusive festivals, the project will explore:

  • Body percussion as a participatory and accessible musical form
  • Gender mainstreaming and cultural diversity in music education and performance
  • Audience engagement and new concert formats
  • Mobility for musicians across borders
  • Sustainable event planning and environmental awareness

🏛 Rome: A Symbolic Starting Point

The Kick-off began on May 28 with an internal staff meeting at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where project planning and vision-sharing took center stage. On May 29, the event moved to the European Commission Representation in Italy, underlining the strong European dimension of the initiative.

The presence of representatives from all four partner institutions highlighted the transnational spirit of the project and opened the door to a period of rich collaboration, intercultural dialogue, and shared musical creation.

🌱 ACe20 and the Future of Sustainable Culture

Special attention during the meeting was given to the role of ACe20, the partner responsible for coordinating EU-CODE’s sustainability strategy. From assessing environmental impacts to designing greener cultural events, ACe20 will ensure that EU-CODE doesn’t just sound good—but also leaves a lighter footprint on the planet.

🎺 Looking Ahead

With rehearsals, residencies, festivals, and cross-border performances on the horizon, EU-CODE is setting the stage for a new kind of wind orchestra—one that is rooted in collaboration, diversity, and the shared values of European culture.

Stay tuned for more updates, behind-the-scenes insights, and stories from the people who are shaping this exciting journey.
